First aid in case of (developmental) delays:
Mediative learning

Say your child is having trouble keeping up at school, with maths for instance, or spelling, planning or social interaction. Of course you arrange supplementary tutoring or coaching. And that may do the trick. Your child receives counseling on subject matter level, does extra sums, takes idiom lists home, puts up overviews of keywords, hints and tricks in their cabinet or locker, maybe gets kanjertraining (special methodology that promotes trust, feeling safe and at ease, and developing calmness and mutual respect), etc.

But what if in the end all that doesn’t seem to work?

Then mediative learning could be the answer, a method that focuses on your child’s cognitive functions. Even in the most difficult cases we can achieve improvement and progress. After an intake interview we will devise a tailor-made remedial program for your child. This ensures that we know exactly which areas need extra attention.

Mediative learning

ONLY IF YOUR BASIS IS SOLID CAN YOU CLIMB TO THE SUMMIT

What does a child, a growing youngster, need in order to be able to do math or learn spelling? Where exactly do things go wrong in his or her case? Which skills do you need to have before you are actually able to organize and plan your work?

Cognitieve functies piramide

As the diagram shows, and which is also clear to pupils, the pyramid can only stand firm if and when the three bottom building blocks in particular are ‘up to par’ and stable. The cognitive functions as shown in the diagram aren’t just essential for performing well at school, but their importance is in fact broader: they form the basis for a wide range of developmental processes on a social and emotional level for instance.

Getting a grip on your on process and success.

What we often see is that once children are lagging behind in some way they completely become dependent on extra instruction and support at school, as well as supplementary tutoring and help outside school. This enforces their notion that they are unable to get things done on their own, which again affects their self-image. As a result, bit by bit they will lose any grip whatsoever on their own learning process, sometimes seem to lean back in indifference, or may come to the conclusion that success or failure is simply a matter of chance: ‘nothing you can do about it…’

Mediative learning restores your child’s sense of control, which in turn improves their self-image. The pupil takes ownership of his or her talents and qualities and subsequently also of any points of improvement and their individual process and success.

Customized learning materials

As work progresses, we will be analyzing at the pupil’s level which cognitive functions are already in place and being applied effectively, and which functions need to be further developed for better results. The learning materials are designed to match the pupil’s talents while at the same time exploring the limits of the individual cognitive functions. This causes pupils to be motivated to work on their skills and triggers them to reflect upon them. As a consequence they will be functioning better, and not just in school, with an overall improvement of results. Once the underlying cognitive functions have been addressed, follow-up with remedial teaching on a subject and content level will usually result in making up lost ground and kids performing at the level that naturally suits them.

After an intake interview we will map out which skills deserve further development. This leads to an action plan as the basis for your child to begin work with the remedial teacher.

We work in 10-week blocks. This will help your child to find his or her own learning path with the educational system that suits them best. New pupils have a 5-week trial period.
